Ron Hogan At 53 minutes, this combo of uncanny bluegrassy twang and deep metal churn is perfect for a session on the treadmill, with plenty of opportunities to push yourself hard until “The Boy Who Stared…” gives you ten minutes to bring yourself in for a soft landing. Favorite track: The Boy Who Stared When He Seen the Trains A'Comin.

barleybase An absolute masterpiece that stands at the precipice of the merging point between very similar yet different genres. As someone who has always lived near, yet not quite in the shadow of Appalachia, I have always been drawn to them. This album encapsulates that mystifying feeling of setting foot in those forests, filled with atmosphere, the twang of strings, and the punch of hard guitar riffs. Put this on your must listen list and exalt in Mountain Shadow. Favorite track: Ghosts of Farmlands.

about

Damian (from Robes of Snow) and his childhood compatriot KA have crafted a self-titled album that draws from different genres of music as well as cinema, folk tales, and literary myth to create Mountain Shadow’s unique sound. Folk and bluegrass can be heard alongside dissonant riffs, pained shrieks, feral growls, and session drummer CJ Yacoub’s furious percussion. Each member’s obsession with horror and the terrors of the natural world can be heard in the field recordings and the sparse and haunting synths that permeate the album.

Eternal Appreciation to Reese Burns, CJ Yacoub, and Katie Skau.
